Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the decision by his son, Abba Abubakar, to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a personal choice that does not reflect his own political position.
Atiku, a former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said in a statement that such decisions are neither unusual nor troubling in a democratic setting, even when they occur within the same family.
He stressed that as a committed democrat, he does not impose his political beliefs on his children, noting that matters of conscience must remain free from coercion.
The former vice president added that the same principle guides his approach to national politics, insisting that Nigerians must be allowed to make political choices without pressure or intimidation.
Atiku, however, said his major concern remains the performance of the APC-led government, which he accused of inflicting deep economic and social hardships on the country through poor governance.
He said he remains committed to working with like-minded Nigerians to restore good governance and provide a credible alternative capable of delivering relief, hope and progress to the people.
