Senator Athan Nneji Achonu has formally entered the race to succeed the incumbent governor, pitching his ambition on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in what observers say could significantly reshape the state’s political landscape.
Achonu, widely known by his political mantra “Apostle of Aku Ruo Ulo,” is banking on his grassroots appeal and organisational structure to mount a formidable challenge in the 2027/2028 governorship election.
Achonu had vied for Imo Governoship race in 2027 on the platform of the Labour Party, LP.
The development comes amid APGA’s recent adoption of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its presidential candidate, a move that has further complicated the dynamics ahead of the next general elections and heightened interest in the party’s internal positioning.
Last week, Achonu convened a meeting with over 2,000 of his grassroots political leaders across the state, where he formally announced his resignation from the Labour Party, his entry into APGA, and his intention to seek the party’s governorship ticket.
The gathering, described by insiders as a show of strength, ended with a unanimous pledge of loyalty from his supporters, who also vowed to defect with him to APGA and mobilise wider support to secure victory at the polls.
Addressing the stakeholders, Achonu outlined his governance philosophy, promising an inclusive administration that prioritises consultation, broad-based participation, and the integration of diverse viewpoints in decision-making.
“When we win, we shall run a government that listens and consults, one that takes into account every shade of opinion and actively involves the people’s representatives in policy formulation and programme implementation,” he said.
He further pledged to harness the expertise of technocrats both within Nigeria and in the diaspora, stressing that their experience would be critical in driving effective governance and sustainable development.
Political commentators have since described his move as calculated and timely, noting that his structure, combined with APGA’s established base, could present a serious test for rival parties in the state.
