Tension has escalated in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province following violent unrest triggered by the controversial coronation of an alleged Igbo traditional ruler, forcing Nigerian authorities to step in with a security advisory to their citizens.
The crisis erupted on Monday after reports surfaced that Solomon Eziko had been crowned as a traditional leader of the Igbo community in the province—an action that quickly ignited outrage among sections of the local population.
What began as organised dissent rapidly degenerated into chaos, as protesters took to the streets in KuGompo City, unleashing violence that saw several vehicles set ablaze and properties destroyed.
Eyewitness accounts and multiple reports indicate that the protest was spearheaded by members of ActionSA, a South African political party, who vehemently opposed the coronation. The group reportedly argued that such a move undermines the sovereignty of the province and violates the country’s constitutional framework.
As tensions spiralled, the demonstrations turned destructive, with buildings and assets believed to belong to foreign nationals becoming targets of the mob.
The scale of the violence and the growing hostility toward non-indigenes raised immediate concerns about the safety of Nigerians and other immigrants living in the affected areas.
Amid the deteriorating security situation, the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa moved swiftly, issuing an urgent advisory to Nigerians across the country.
In a circular released on Monday, the mission warned of “palpable tension” and urged citizens to adopt precautionary measures to safeguard their lives and property.
The advisory outlined key safety steps, including heightened vigilance, reduced movement, and avoidance of volatile areas, particularly where protests or gatherings are taking place.
Nigerians were also cautioned to limit interactions with unfamiliar individuals and remain security-conscious at all times as authorities monitor the situation.
The development underscores the fragile balance surrounding issues of identity, tradition, and sovereignty in South Africa, with the fallout from the disputed coronation now posing broader security risks for foreign communities.
