The Federal Government has listed parts of Imo State among areas at risk of flooding following forecasts of heavy rainfall expected between April 8 and April 12, 2026.
The alert was issued by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment in a notice dated April 8 and signed by Usman Bokani, director of the erosion, flood and coastal zone management department.
According to the notice, several communities across the country are projected to experience intense rainfall within the period, with possible flooding in low-lying and vulnerable locations.
States highlighted in the advisory include Ebonyi State, Anambra State, Ogun State, Taraba State, Cross River State, Benue State, Delta State, Rivers State and Abia State.
In Imo State, the government specifically identified Nworieubi, Okigwe, Otoko and Owerri as areas likely to be affected by the anticipated downpour.
The ministry warned that the volume and intensity of rainfall in these locations may exceed normal levels, increasing the risk of flash floods and surface water accumulation.
It advised residents in the affected communities and adjoining areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to minimise exposure to flood hazards.
The federal government also called on state authorities and emergency response agencies to activate preparedness measures, including drainage clearance and public awareness campaigns.
The alert forms part of a broader forecast covering multiple states, reflecting growing concerns over seasonal flooding patterns and their impact on communities.
Earlier in the year, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency had cautioned against premature planting due to misleading early rains recorded in February and early March.
Authorities reiterated the need for coordinated action among stakeholders to mitigate potential damage to lives, property and critical infrastructure during the forecast period.
