Constituents Demand Release Of Detained Lawmaker

Following the continuous detention of the Imo State lawmaker Representing Ohaji-Egbema State Constituency, Hon. Cyriacus Okoro Heclus over alleged assault, the constituents of Ohaji-Egbema, have engaged in protest demanding for his release.

Leaders, women and youths of Ohaji-Egbema staged the protest, which they described as “curfew” at the major junction of the LGA known as “Shell Junction”.

Speaking to Journalists during the protests, Hon. Prince Carly Ugochukwu Nwokoma, who is a leader in the LGA, lamented that the arrest and detention of their lawmaker is a humiliation to the entire people of Ohaji-Egbema and can no longer be accepted by them.

He disclosed that Ohaji-Egbema have suffered numerous maltreatment, and the height of the insult and maltreatment is the arrest of their serving member of the State House of Assembly.

He declared that continued detention of Ohaji-Egbema Lawmaker will cripple the revenue of the Federal and State governments in the area, through the stoppage of the operations of of oil companies in the LGA until the lawmaker is being released

Hon. Cyriacus Okoro Heclus and four of his aides were arrested on Friday 13th November 2020 over altercations with the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon Amara Iwuanyawnu at Government House, Owerri.

The matter was brought before Owerri Magistrate Court.

The court presided by D.V Okoroji, ordered that the lawmaker be remanded in the facility of Nigeria Correctional Service for assault.

The matter comes up again on Wednesday, Nov 18 for further hearing.
