A youth group under the aegis Committee of Youths on Mobilisation and Sensitisation (CYMS) has called on the National Assembly to confirm Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa as the EFCC Chairman to curb corruption in the country.
The gruop made this known in a statement signed by its Director General, Comrade Obinna Nwaka, and made available to NAN on Thursday in Owerri.
It made the call following the appointment of Bawa by President Muhammadu Buhari as the substantive Chairman of Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
It said corruption is a trend that has brought national and international embarrassment to thr the nation and its economy and needed a man like Bawa to fight and curb it to a minimal.
In a letter to the National Assembly with subject “Nomination of Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa for Confirmation as the EFCC Chairman, a Welcome Development by the Nigerian Youth” the group said Bawa would contribute immensely to the fight against corruption having spent all his work life at EFCC.
It said that Bawa, who joined the organisation in 2004, is well equipped to bring the necessary changes that Nigerians desired to rebuild the image of the country.
It said his nomination is for the interest of meaningful Nigerians and overall interest of Nigerian youths.
The CYMS further urged the National Assembly to disregard any protest and petition against Bawa from what it called ‘unpatriotic elements’ who do not want young people to contribute to national development.
“Until his appointment, Abdulrasheed Bawa was a Deputy Chief Detective Superintendent with the EFCC.
“If confirmed by the senate to lead the anti graft agency, Bawa will deploy his wealth of experience to bear in the war against corruption in Nigeria,” the group said.
It will be recalled that the presidential spokesperson on Tuesday announced that President Buhari had asked the senate to confirm Bawa, who currently heads the Lagos zonal office of the EFCC, as the substantive chairman of the commission.
Bawa was in October 2015 appointed to head the commission’s investigation of Diezani Alison-Madueke, a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, and her associates, and had continued to play the role till date.
“If his nomination to be substantive chairman of the EFCC sails through, Bawa, 40, would be the youngest person to ever lead the organisation which has been without a substantive head since November 2015,” the statement said.
The group noted that Bawa’s appointed would be a true reflection of youth inclusion in the President Buhari-led administration.
Our correspondent reports that the CYMS is a pro government organization with the core mandate of sensitizing Nigerian youths on Federal Government’s policies and programmes and to key into same to benefit them.
