After Imo LG Election, Attention Shifts To 2027 Guber Contest

by admin

The dust has settled on Imo State’s local government elections, and attention has shifted to the 2027 governorship race, three years from now.

Before the LG elections, the Imo Charter of Equity dominated political discourse in the State, emphasizing the rotation of the governorship seat.

Owerri and Okigwe zones presented compelling arguments for being the next beneficiaries of the Charter when Uzodimma exits in 2027.

With the local government election over, governorship aspirants seeking to succeed Uzodimma will intensify their political strategies.

However, the opposition in the State faces a daunting task in dislodging the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Under Uzodimma’s reign, the APC has won presidential, National Assembly, gubernatorial, and local government elections, solidifying its dominance in Imo State.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) have struggled to gain traction, failing to win any elections in the state.

This trend should be a basis for concern for the opposition parties as 2027 guber election draws near.

While the opposition contend that the outcome of recent elections in the State is largely influenced by the ruling party and does not reflect the stance of the people, analysts contend that if there is no radical electoral reforms and the opposition wake up from slumber, APC’s grip would continue unhindered even after the 2027 Guber polls
