Barely few days after the sack of the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, the Imo State Government has announced a significant restructuring in the health sector with the merger of the Ministry of Tertiary Health and the Ministry of Primary Health into a unified body.
The newly consolidated ministry will now operate as the Imo State Ministry of Health.
In a statement signed by Chief Cosmas Iwu, Secretary to the Government of Imo State, the government revealed that the decision was in line with Governor Hope Uzodimma’s reform agenda.
“This reform is part of the government’s broader effort to streamline operations and enhance service delivery across all levels of healthcare in the state,” the statement read.
“Dr. Mrs. Vivian Egu has been retained as the Commissioner for the newly merged Ministry of Health. However, the former Commissioner for Tertiary Health, Prof. Chukwuma Ubakah, has been relieved of his position and directed to ensure a seamless handover of all responsibilities.
“His Excellency, Senator Hope Uzodimma, also instructed that all staff and equipment previously under the former ministries be consolidated under the new structure. “The government appreciates the contributions of Prof. Chukwuma Ubakah in steering the Ministry of Tertiary Health and counts on his continued cooperation to ensure a smooth transition,” the statement added.
The statement further mandated that all handover and merger formalities be completed by the close of work on Monday, June 2, 2025. The directive underscored the urgency of compliance by all those affected.
