Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has officially launched a state-owned airline, Enugu Air, describing it as a bold step towards transforming the state into Nigeria’s leading hub for investment, living, and tourism.
The inaugural flight of Enugu Air took off on Monday in a ceremony Mbah called “a historic moment for Ndi Enugu.”
Addressing dignitaries and residents at the launch, the governor declared, “It is an honour to stand before you today, not only as a governor but as a fellow believer in the power of vision.”
Mbah, whose administration recently marked its second anniversary, said the launch was “a fitting gift to Ndi Enugu.”
He explained that the airline represents more than just aviation progress but also embodies his administration’s commitment to creating enablers for enterprise and opening up new economic sectors.
“We began this journey with no empty promises. Among the key objectives we outlined upon assuming office was the pledge to make Enugu the premier destination for investments, living, and tourism in Nigeria. Today, we are witnessing a clear pathway to that goal,” he stated.
Also speaking at the event, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, addressed concerns over the status of the Enugu airport.
He clarified that the facility was not being sold but concessioned to private investors to enhance operations and economic opportunities.
“I have seen some comments saying, ‘No, we are selling Enugu airport out.’ We are concessioning it. The process is supported by Mr. President, by FAAN, by the Ministry of Aviation, and by the National Assembly committees,” Keyamo said.
He added that the concessioning would include the cargo terminal, which he said would boost exports and create jobs for the people of Enugu.
“You can now process exports directly from Enugu here—the cargo terminal—for the good and employment of Enugu people. I thought it was necessary to mention it here today,” Keyamo noted, commending Mbah for his proactive approach to driving private sector participation.
