The Abia State Government has raised the alarm over the rising cases of cult-related activities across the state and has directed security agencies to clamp down on those behind the menace.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this during a press briefing at the Government House, Umuahia, on Monday. He addressed journalists after the weekly executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
“The state government has observed with dismay the growing incidents of cult activities in the state. As a responsible government, this administration will spare no efforts in ensuring that the State is rid of cult activities.”Kanu said.
He described the perpetrators as “undesirable elements” threatening the peace and safety of innocent citizens and warned that the government would not tolerate any form of lawlessness.
Kanu also revealed that staff of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, disengaged by the previous administration between 2018 and 2022, have begun receiving their outstanding entitlements. “So far, 249 individuals have already been paid,” he stated.
He announced that the recruitment of health workers recently approved by Governor Otti has commenced. He said application portals have been opened by the Abia State Civil Service Commission for interested candidates.
