Imo state is 50 years this year. Created out of the ashes and pains of the horrific civil war, the state named after Imo river if given a human name, would have been called “Obijuru.” Coming into being six years after the devastating war, the founding fathers of the state demonstrated remarkable vision, resilience, refusing to be to yield to the challenges of the time. Indeed, they proved that being held down by sorrows made taking positive steps impossible. So they had to move, lead by espousing a new vision, inspiring faith and courage.This was focused on rebuilding community strength, solidarity and caving greater home identity. They did give in to the pessimists nor allowed the clan of the Baal prophets to demoralize them. They kept the flame aglow, the flag flying – lighting the way so others can follow. This they did, this their people did.
I salute all the great men and women who initiated and worked for the creation of the state. They were the vision bearers who adhered to Peter Drucker’s philosophy that “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” They created the future. We, in spite of the pains felt or feeling, have every reason to remember them with pride and gratitude for their grace and grit- their heroic labours will never be in vain. We celebrate them in our hearts, humming prayers for their souls to be blessed and those still alive, for them to note, we appreciate. We pray that the Imo of their dreams come to be.
Imo state is the People’s state united in spirit to rebuild and recover the years the locusts and cankerworm had beaten off our collective socioeconomic and political fabrics. Though the paths might have differed, the mission is the same. Worthy mentions will always be made of the great Igbo son whom nature placed the sacred responsibility of nursing the young state, Commodore Ndubuise Kalu- first administrator of the state. He was the Moses of the Imo. He created the strong platform for the vision to stand and the mission to move. Dee Sam Mbakwe, the first civilian governor came onboard prepared for the task. In spite of the difficulties, he strived. He developed the roadmap for the upcoming generations, replaced the dirge to a “Shirat HaYam.” Today, he is deitified as an ancestor with whom the people are well pleased and proud of. All the other governors who had opportunities to superintend the affairs of the state are remembered for their great efforts. History records all.
The man wearing the cap of duty in the state today, Governor Hope Uzodimma understands the demands of the office. He is doing the works so well that the people know an Mbakwe cometh again. Indeed, to say that governor Uzodimma is doing well is not a praise but an acknowledgement of fact.
It is in his honour that the state is celebrating her fifty years anniversary with him as the governor. Beyond this, he has given the Imo people reason to celebrate through his service records in the past six years. In the political landscape dominated and characterized by power struggles and often times, bitterness, Uzodimma understands and appreciates the intrigues- a master political chess player, his eyes are always on the board and mind not just how to outsmart and outplay his opponents but mainly, how to deploy his wins to the best of service to the people. No doubt, he has out danced his doubters and proved the cynics wrong through his quality performances. His style is robust, deep thinking, conscience, dialogue, equity, calculation and symbolism. This speaks for him.
Under him, the visions and missions of the great patriots who initiated and achieved the creation of the state is regaining grounds. The state is witnessing vast infrastructural developments and renewal of trust and confidence in governance. The glory of the state has been on steady match towards full restoration.
Beyond the great vital facilities being put in places across the state, a new political consciousness based on consensus is being created through the adoption of the Imo state charter of equity which provides for the rotations of the office of the governor of the state among the three sister zones. Indeed, among the greatest of Uzodimma’s legacies will be the implementation of the charter. This will protect the great gains made under his administration as well as ensure inclusive participations in the governance of the state.
This will be the best anniversary gift to the people as it will reduce if not remove the tensions, bitterness, acrimony and rat race associated with the governorship elections in the state.
As we celebrate this great milestone, we are once more, reminded of our duties to the state. Let everyone irrespective of political affiliation or social status recognize that duty calls him to the services of our dear state at his own level and place. The philosophy that inspired our forebears should always rekindle our devotions towards building a greater state.
May God continue to bless our state and guide our governor towards the achievements of the common good.
