Imo Guber 2027: OZAC Tells Owerri Zone APC Aspirants To Step Up Now

The Owerri Zone Awareness Coalition (OZAC) has urged all potential governorship aspirants from Owerri zone within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to step forward and show interest in the 2027 governorship race, warning that continued inaction could cost the zone its rightful opportunity.

According to OZAC in a statement signed by its President General, Emmanuel Okwu, the conclusion of the APC state congress, which produced Austin Onyedebelu of Orlu as chairman, confirms that the Imo Charter of Equity is in full effect, making it clear that the next governorship candidate of the party is expected to come from either Owerri or Okigwe zones.

The coalition stressed that Owerri zone guber aspirants cannot afford to wait for the Governor or party leadership to choose for them. OZAC said the moment is now, and the time for shouting or awareness campaigns is over.

OZAC further noted that aspirants do not need to formally declare immediately but must signal readiness, and demonstrate political visibility within the party.

“For too long, Owerri has remained quiet while other zones position themselves,” OZAC said. “Enough awareness has been created. Now is the time for action.”

The coalition emphasized that Owerri is not in short supply of men and women of competence and capacity to be governor. While it acknowledged that the Governor has the discretion to choose his successor, OZAC warned that Owerri zone must not sit back and simply pray that the governorship seat will be handed on a platter.

OZAC also pointed out that Okigwe zone, led by figures such as former Governor Ikedi Ohakim, has already begun mobilizing support and asserting its presence. The coalition warned that continued passivity by Owerri politicians could jeopardize the zone’s opportunity.

With an Orlu man now leading APC in Imo State, OZAC said the political focus has shifted squarely to Owerri and Okigwe zones, making it imperative for potential Owerri governorship aspirants to prepare, organize, and assert their visibility ahead of the primaries.

The coalition argued that the Charter of Equity has now historically guaranteed balance in Imo politics, and that Owerri must assert itself proactively to maintain fairness and uphold the principle of equitable zoning.

OZAC called on Owerri APC members to mobilize resources, mentor aspirants, and create a united front, ensuring credible candidates emerge to contest the governorship in 2027.

The coalition further emphasized that the window for visible action is narrowing, warning that aspirants who fail to signal interest early risk being overshadowed by competitors from Okigwe zone.

OZAC reiterated its commitment to support aspirants from Owerri zone who demonstrate seriousness, capability, and readiness, warning that the coalition will hold accountable those who choose inaction over leadership.
