The South East Coalition for Good Governance (SECG) has urged Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, to rescind his membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and return to the Labour Party (LP), arguing that the ADC lacks the political strength to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement in Enugu and signed by Donatus Uba, Publicity Secretary of SECG, the coalition said Obi currently finds himself among “political wolves” within the ADC and cannot be guaranteed the presidential ticket of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Uba described the ADC as a political vehicle for Atiku Abubakar’s continued presidential ambitions, asserting that the party does not possess the organisational capacity or national firepower to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential poll.
According to SECG, the ADC’s inability to mount a credible challenge to the APC — led by President Bola Tinubu — underscores its lack of political spine, making it an unsuitable platform for any serious presidential contender, especially Obi.
Citing provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026, Uba reminded Obi that a person cannot hold membership in more than one political party at the same time and must regularise his political affiliation. “Section 84 of the Electoral Act makes it clear that simultaneous membership of multiple political parties is prohibited, and dual membership is liable to sanctions,” the statement read.
Uba argued that Obi’s continued stay in the ADC amounts to political indecision that could undermine his viability as a national candidate. “If Peter Obi truly believes he is the best positioned to unite Nigerians and defeat the APC, he should cancel his membership of the ADC and re-affiliate with the Labour Party, where his support base remains strongest,” the SECG spokesman said.
The group described Obi as the biggest political threat to Tinubu’s re-election plans, asserting that the mood of Nigerians is largely against the continuation of the current administration beyond 2027. “The state of the nation has left Nigerians miserable, and only Obi has the capacity to rescue the situation,” Uba said.
SECG also expressed optimism that Obi’s recent visit to Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, in Kano might result in a productive political alliance, suggesting that a successful partnership between Obi and Kwankwaso could significantly weaken the APC’s hold on power.
“We believe that if such an alliance materialises and is properly grounded in a viable platform like the Labour Party, the APC should brace itself to lose Aso Rock in 2027,” the statement added.
The coalition affirmed that the Labour Party remains the ideal platform for Obi’s presidential aspiration, urging him to make the strategic decision to return and consolidate opposition support ahead of the national elections.
