At a time when families are mourning, residents are living in fear, and insecurity continues to spread across communities, the people expected leadership, empathy, and, at the very least, a public statement from the governor. Instead, what the public keeps seeing are political speeches, APC meetings, endorsements, consultations, and discussions centred around party primary elections.
This is the tragedy of governance in Imo today.
Every recent public appearance by Governor Uzodimma seems tied to political calculations within the APC, while the pressing issues confronting ordinary citizens continue to receive little or no visible attention. Roads remain unsafe, communities continue to cry out over insecurity, yet Hope Uzodimma’s energy appears concentrated on political succession battles and party supremacy.
That is why many people now see the call for the governor to “investigate” these killings as little more than a ceremonial appeal. Investigation requires urgency, concern, and willingness to act. But how can citizens expect decisive action from a leadership that has not even shown enough concern to publicly address the incident?
Even opposition voices and civil society groups have repeatedly criticised the silence of Hope Uzodimma on security matters. Reports noted that critics condemned the failure of his government to make any meaningful public response after previous violent incidents in the state.
The painful reality is that insecurity in Imo State is gradually becoming normalised under an atmosphere of political distraction. Rather than constantly reassuring citizens and confronting the worsening security situation head-on, the political class seems permanently trapped in election mode.
Leadership is not only tested during campaigns. It is tested during moments of fear, crisis, and uncertainty. It is tested when citizens are looking for comfort, direction, and protection.
Hope Uzodimma’s silence over alleged killings sends the wrong message to grieving families and frightened communities. It creates the impression that the lives of ordinary people rank far below political interests and internal APC arrangements.
And that is the real danger confronting Imo State — a government increasingly consumed by politics while governance slowly fades into the background.
