The Association of Okigwe Zone Town’s Union Lagos (AOZTUL) has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating fire that razed Eke Okigwe Market, describing the incident as a painful tragedy that has left many traders counting heavy losses. The group said the inferno dealt a severe blow to the livelihoods of affected traders and the economy of the Okigwe community.
In a condolence message jointly signed by its President, Barr. Emeka Iwueze, and Secretary, Chief Israel Chukwu, the association sympathised with the market management, traders, families affected and the entire Okigwe community. “We are deeply saddened by the devastating fire outbreak that razed Eke Okigwe Market. We pray for God’s comfort for those who suffered losses, healing for the injured, and strength for everyone picking up the pieces,” the statement read.
The union noted that Eke Okigwe Market is more than a commercial centre, describing it as “the heartbeat of our people’s economy and a source of sustenance for thousands of households.” It added that the destruction caused by the fire was not only a material loss but one that had deeply affected the entire community.
AOZTUL also appealed to the Federal Government, the Imo State Government, and well-meaning sons and daughters of Okigwe Zone at home and abroad to urgently assist the victims. “We solicit your support to help rebuild the market and provide relief to those who lost their goods and means of livelihood. May Okigwe rise again, stronger,” the association stated.
