The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared the Rainbow Coalition a vehicle for its 2027 campaign in Imo State, despite fierce opposition from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the PDP National Secretary and a governorship aspirant, said the coalition provides a platform on which the party in the state is firmly anchored. He challenged opponents to face the electorate rather than fight the coalition.
The Rainbow Coalition was initiated by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike as a broad alliance of politicians across party lines, with the principal aim of mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. It has, however, triggered a major contest within the APC, whose Governors’ Forum, led by Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has kicked against arrangements seen as capable of undermining the party’s structures and candidates.
Anyanwu spoke at the inauguration of the Imo East Senatorial Campaign Council at the PDP State Secretariat in Owerri. He said politicians opposed to the coalition should concentrate on developing strategies to persuade voters.
“Those afraid of Rainbow Coalition cannot win election on free and fair basis,” he said.
He claimed the PDP was already campaigning across the state while other parties, including the APC, were reluctant to do so.
He charged members of the campaign council to work together to deliver the party’s candidates, saying their victory would open the way for the PDP’s return to Government House. He added that the candidates had the experience and capacity to win in 2027, and urged party members to operate within the law.
The PDP’s Imo East senatorial candidate, Prince Eze Madumere, pledged to lead a campaign aimed at restoring confidence in Owerri Zone, citing insecurity, unemployment and rising poverty as major concerns.
