Human rights activist, Ebubeagu Ekenulo has threatened legal action against traditional practices in Amaigbo Ancient Kingdom, Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State, which he described as unconstitutional and repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience.

In an open letter dated October 21, 2026, addressed to the traditional ruler, Nze na Ozo, community leaders, religious bodies, the town union and indigenes, Mr Ekenulo accused some community authorities of perpetuating customs that undermine fundamental human rights and violate the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He alleged that the disputed practices had contributed to prolonged disputes among families, traditional institutions and community associations, resulting in multiple court cases. The activist attributed the situation to what he described as the distortion of authentic Igbo culture and disregard for Nigerian laws, adding that he had repeatedly protested against the practices at Nze na Ozo meetings.

Mr Ekenulo said he would launch a sustained campaign through his non-governmental organisations, including SAVE IMO, to challenge customs he considers unlawful. He also announced plans to approach the courts for declaratory reliefs and orders to invalidate and expunge practices found to be inconsistent with the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Citing Section 1(3) of the Constitution and Section 18(3) of the Evidence Act, the activist argued that customs inconsistent with the Constitution or repugnant to natural justice should not be enforced. He insisted that Amaigbo should not be exempt from the application of Nigerian law, declaring that the time had come to end traditional practices that violate constitutional rights.
