Residents of Federal Housing Estate, Egbu were worst hit by Thursday’s flood that ravaged major areas in Owerri metropolis after a heavy downpour.
The rain started at about 5am and stopped at 1:00pm leaving in its trail a devastating flood that wrecked homes and properties.
A victim of the flood in the area, Mr. Obinna Anoruo said he rescued nothing from his house as the flood damaged all his properties
“ I lost my university certificate in the process. I rescued nothing from the flood” he lamented.
A resident , Obinna Akuwudike, said about 15 houses and six cars were affected by the flood on the estate. He explained that his two generators and a car were submerged by the flood, with his electronics damaged.
He said “This is terrible . I lost my two generators and my small car was submerged. My neighbour , Peter Onu , and his wife are worse hit . They lost their two cars to the flood . There are other victims . ”
Some of the victims lamented that the poor channeling of the drainage system along Egbu area as reason for the flood.
However, relieve came the way of some victims as some concerned citizens and good Samaritans offered aid to them.
This newspaper was told that some of the victims who needed immediate aid were lodged in nearby hotels while adequate arrangements were made to take care of others
State government officials were reported to have visited the area. Chief of Staff to Governor Rochas Okorocha, Uche Nwosu and Secretary to Government of Imo State, George Eche collected names of those badly affected by the flood menace and went round to ascertain the level of illegal construction work in the area suspected to be responsible for the flood.
