There are indications that some governorship aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Imo State are bent on hijacking delegates that will emerge at its forthcoming delegates congresses
The party had prescribed the election of three delegates from the 305 wards that will join “statutory delegates” to form an electoral college to elect party flagbearers for various elective positions.
Reports had surfaced on the Social media at the weekend revealing plans by a governorship aspirant to hijack the process prior to the September 8 delegates Congress.
A House of Assembly aspirant and well known comedian, Mr.Uche Ogbuagu was reported to have alleged of a plot to remove him as delegate from his ward delegates list in his Ikeduru Local Government Area.
Such complains are also not emanating from other local chapters of the party in the State as this newspaper observed that some of the governorship aspirants are using their proxies and foot-soldiers in the wards and local Governments to ensure their preferred delegates win the congresses.
Our reporter observed that in some areas rather than allowing those who purchased forms to stand for elections, the idea of harmonization of delegates is popping up.
A group within the party, PDP Mandate Initiative had condemned the ongoing development in the party.
“We view this sad development as the height of impunity, intimidation and suppression. This is the same practice that nearly destroyed our party in the past.
“This is in gross violation of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017”) the group stated in a statement.
The PDP governed Imo State fro 1999- 2007. Since then, it has battled to regain power. Aspirants eying the governorship ticket of the party are Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha, Senator Athan Achonu, Prof Jude Njoku, Chukwuma Ekomaru (SAN)
