As the 2023 presidential election draws near, a socio political group, the South East Coalition for Good Governance, SECG, has vowed to work against candidates in the South East, who intend to ride on the popularity of Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to get elected into public office.
Emmanuel Okwu, President, SECG in a statement in Enugu, said it would however back Obi’s presidential bid, pledging to promote candidates in the region, irrespective of political leanings who are competent and who have the capacity to hold various public offices.
“We have observed that there are some failed politicians, political opportunists, who rushed into Peter Obi’s Labour party and have emerged as candidates of the LP and who intend to ride on the wave of obidients to win elections. They will not succeed.
“Some of these failed politicians are among those who have contributed to the sorry state of the nation, and who lost tickets in the PDP and APC and have found political solace in the LP, hiding under the wave of Obidients movement.
The group noted that with the campaign season now in full swing, it will encourage issues based campaigns and promote candidates irrespective of political affiliation who posses capacity and competence.
“We align ourselves with the views of former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, who said recently, that the next elections will be all about competence, capacity and character.
“We will join the fray and even endorse candidates, whether in APC, PDP, Labour Party, NNDP, who posses the right character to be elected and we will support them ahead of the elections.
“Next month, we will kick off our awareness programmes across the five South East states and sensitize our people on the need to vote for capable and competent candidates no matter the political party they belong to” part of the statement read.
