Insecurity: Special Night Patrols To Commence In Owerri

The Imo State government has inaugurated a joint force for special night patrols in Owerri Metropolis as part of measures to tackle insecurity.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Joint Night Patrol Task Force in Owerri on Sunday, Brig.-Gen. Usman Lawal, commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Obinze, said that the professionalism shown by the security agencies brought about the peace so far enjoyed in the state.

Commanders and the chiefs of Imo’s security agencies attended the inauguration, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Lawal, who spoke on their behalf, said that Owerri metropolis has seen an increase in the number of crimes and criminal activity, necessitating the need to stop the trend.

The commander stated that the Joint Night Patrol Teams would use their knowledge, commitment, and unflinching resolve to ensure the safety and security of the lives and property of the inhabitants of the metropolis.

He enjoined those involved in the joint night patrols to maintain professionalism in order to earn the trust of the public

“Due to the recent increase in armed robberies, kidnappings, and other associated crimes, particularly at night, it is important to defend the capital city.

“This is vital, particularly during this time of intense political activity and campaigning ahead of the Nov. 11 governorship race,” he said.

In his remarks, Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, noted that the establishment of a Joint Night Patrol Task Force by the security agencies was a good development that would ensure the safety of the people and property.

The Governor was represented by the Commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs, Dr. Ugorji Okechukwu Ugorji.

The Joint Task Force comprise personnel from Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Air force, Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.
