There is fresh controversy over plans by the Imo State government to send 4,000 Imo youths to Canada and Europe.
Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, had during mobilization for votes, announced plans to send 4,000 Imo youths to Europe and Canada before the end of December 2023.
However, top sources at the EU Commission office in Abuja, headed by Ambassador Samuela Isopi, stated that the Commission “is not aware of this deal”.
While an official statement is awaited by the Commission to clear the air on the alleged plans by the governor to send 4,000 Imo youths to Europe for relocation and employment, the Labour party, LP, has described the promise as an insult.
Speaking on Arise News, Friday, the Labour Party Director Of Media, Yunusa Tanko, said it is deceitful for the governor to make such promise when his administration is yet to provide basic employment to the youths in the State
He said “The Athan Achonu governorship manifesto tried to look into the issue of the youth.
“It’s not this particular issue of giving job opportunities to Imolites young boys and girls abroad. That is total deceit because how many of them have you employed back home to build the state and you are telling them that you are going to give them tickets, that is insulting.
“Imolites are people who want to build their state. they don’t look for handout and become a refugee in another man’s land.
He also added that Athan Achonu would rather than make fake promises, ensure to provide jobs within the state.
“First of all, we want to ensure that we bring dignity and integrity to Imolites, making sure they have job opportunities within to build their state. By doing so, there would be a collective effort and responsibility to move the state forward” he stated.
