The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has been arrested by Imo State Police Command operatives during an ongoing protest in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

According to reports, the arrest occurred as hoodlums attacked the protesters, damaging vehicles and injuring Labour union members.

As of the time of filing this report, the whereabouts of the NLC President remain unknown as heavily armed security personnel took him away.

Ajaero had called for the shutdown of various sectors in Imo State as part of a protest against the alleged violation of workers’ welfare and non-compliance with the national minimum wage by the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma.

The protest was initiated due to claims that the governor had neglected workers’ welfare, leading to some workers dying due to unpaid salaries.

Ajaero also accused Uzodimma of failing to implement previous agreements, including one reached on January 9, 2021.
