Former Senator Ben Bruce, who represented Bayelsa East in the Senate, has voiced his disapproval of the Nigeria Labour Congress’s decision to call for a nationwide strike in response to the recent assault on its president, Joe Ajaero in Imo State
The NLC had announced its intentions to embark on a nationwide strike next week, pending the response of Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma to their demands.
The move by labour came after the union’s president faced a brutal attack by thugs and members of the police force, allegedly instigated by an aide of Governor Hope Uzodinma, Mr. Chinasa Nwaneri.
Senator Bruce, however, believes that a national strike to address a local issue is not in the best interests of Nigeria.
He stated that such a move could potentially undermine the economic progress achieved under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
He said “A nationwide strike triggered by a localized incident in Imo is not the solution our nation needs at this moment.
“The ongoing reforms are yielding positive results – the Naira is responding favourably, numerous banks are reporting record profits, and the manufacturing sector is showing signs of adjustment, indicating the creation of new jobs.
“Disrupting this progress is not in the national interest.”he said.
Senator Bruce emphasized that Nigeria should not suffer due to an incident in Imo.
