In a setback for Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous Peoples Of Biafra, IPOB, the Supreme Court rejected an order for his release from detention.
Justice Emmanuel Agim, delivering the judgment penned by Justice Garba Lawal, overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision that had previously ordered Kanu’s release and dismissed terrorism charges.
Despite acknowledging the Nigerian government’s questionable and unlawful extradition of Kanu from Kenya, the Supreme Court asserted that such actions didn’t prevent the courts from proceeding with the trial.
Emphasizing the absence of Nigerian law in the case for Kanu’s release based on the unlawful abduction, the court suggested filing a civil matter to address the issue rather than obstructing the trial for alleged criminal charges.
Consequently, Kanu is directed to defend himself against the remaining 7 counts of terrorism charges.
