In a move it says is aimed at curbing excessive government spending, the Abia State House of Assembly has passed a bill to abolish pensions and entitlements for former governors and deputy governors of the State.
This implies that former governors Orji Uzor Kalu, Theodore Orji and Okezie Ikpeazu, would not receive further payment of pensions if the bill is assented into law.
The bill, titled “A Bill for a Law to Repeal the Abia State Governors & Deputy Governors Pensions Law No 4 of 2001 and other Matters,’ was sponsored by the member representing Arochukwu State Constituency, Okoro Uchenna Kalu, and has passed all legislative hurdles pending the approval of Governor Alex Otti.
Speaking on the passage of the Bill, Hon Okoro, highlighted the significance of the bill in aligning with Governor Otti’s agenda to streamline government expenditures in the state.
He emphasized how former governors enjoy lavish benefits while pensioners struggle to receive their dues and active civil servants face salary delays.
“We didn’t just amend the bill, we completely abolished it.
“Former governors and their deputies will no longer receive pensions and entitlements once they leave office. This move is long overdue,” Kalu stated.
He underscored the urgency of redirecting financial resources towards state development and addressing the plight of pensioners and civil servants, echoing Governor Otti’s commitment to tackling pension and salary arrears inherited from previous administrations.
Governor Otti had lamented the backlog of pension and salary payments owed to retired and active civil servants in the state, emphasizing the need for fiscal responsibility and accountability in governance.
A public policy analyst in the State, Osondu Uka said the passage of the bill marks a significant step towards fostering transparency and accountability in Abia State and signals a departure from the era of exorbitant entitlements for former public officials.
While the state awaits Governor Otti’s decision on the bill, analysts contend that the move reflects a growing trend towards reining in government expenditures and prioritizing the welfare of citizens over the privileges of political elites.
