A tragic motor accident on Sunday involving a Toyota Camry with registration number EPE 541 JO and a Hyundai Santa Fe with registration number AAA 212 CD claimed the lives of eight people at Amala, Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State.
The devastating crash left no survivors among the occupants of both vehicles.
Police operatives from Ngor-Okpala Divisional Headquarters arrived promptly at the scene to manage the situation and secure the area.
According to the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, DSP Henry Okoye, the bodies of the deceased were evacuated and deposited in a nearby mortuary.
He added that the vehicles involved were also removed from the road to ease traffic congestion and facilitate further investigation.
“The command has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident and identify the families of the victims. Pictorial evidence has been documented to support inquiries,” DSP Okoye stated.
The State Police Commissioner, CP Aboki Danjuma, expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and reiterated the dangers of reckless driving and excessive speeding, which he identified as major contributors to road accidents.
CP Danjuma urged motorists to observe road safety regulations, drive responsibly, and exercise patience to prevent such tragic occurrences.
“Every driver has a duty to protect their own life and the lives of others by adhering to traffic rules and regulations,” he emphasized.
The police further called on members of the public to assist in identifying the deceased victims.
“Anyone with useful information is encouraged to report to the nearest police station,” the commissioner added.
Eyewitnesses described the collision as horrifying, with both vehicles reportedly traveling at high speed before the impact.
Local residents called for enhanced traffic monitoring in the area to prevent future accidents.
