The Mazi Organization (TMO) founded by Mazi Chima Amadi has condemned the continued harassment and intimidation of commercial bus drivers in Owerri by agents of the Imo State government.
In a press statement released today, May 20, 2025 and signed by its spokesman, Cajethan Duke, the group criticized Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration for fostering what it described as a culture of fear and exploitation.
“This ugly development has no doubt resulted in significant hardship for innocent road users, It raises serious questions about the current administration’s approach to governance.” part of the statement read.
It decried the government’s reliance on commercial bus drivers as a primary source of internal revenue.
“The consistent practice of using poor road users to generate revenue reflects a lack of intellectual rigor and creative problem-solving capacity,” the statement stated.
TMO accused the government of unleashing “miscreants and thugs” on the streets to intimidate and harass citizens. It warned that such actions undermine the well-being and safety of the people while perpetuating fear.
The statement also highlighted the recent protests by commercial bus drivers as a manifestation of the public’s frustration.
“The demonstration is a clear sign of desperation. It is imperative that the government listens to the cries of its citizens,” TMO urged.
The group recommended alternative approaches to revenue generation, emphasizing the need to revamp the state’s moribund industries.
“Industries such as Avutu Poultry, Nsu Ceramic, and Standard Shoe Industry should be revived to create jobs and stimulate economic growth,” the organization suggested.
TMO called for a reassessment of the state’s revenue strategies, insisting that citizens’ welfare should be prioritized.
“A more humane and sustainable approach is necessary—one that does not exploit and brutalize vulnerable citizens,” it noted.
Globally, TMO argued, responsible governments prioritize citizens’ well-being and create environments conducive to economic growth.
“The actions of the Uzodimma-led administration suggest a disconnect from the needs and aspirations of Imo citizens,” the group stated.
The Mazi Organization vowed to continue advocating for the rights of Imo citizens and holding the government accountable.
“We urge those in authority to adopt a more realistic, humane, and proactive approach to governance,” it said.
While expressing sympathy for the affected drivers, TMO urged them to remain calm and law-abiding.
“Our joy is coming,” the statement concluded, reiterating the organization’s commitment to liberating Imo from injustice.
