The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commissioned a state-of-the-art ICT Park at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).
In his address at the commissioning, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, who was represented by Mr. Shuaibu Swade emphasized the park’s key role in Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
“This ICT Park is one of six flagship digital infrastructure projects established by the NCC across strategically selected institutions in Nigeria. It is a part of our broader agenda to accelerate ICT innovation, promote research capabilities, and drive the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy,” he stated.
He described the ICT Park as a multidisciplinary facility designed to foster innovation and digital entrepreneurship.
“The park is equipped with high-capacity computer labs, simulation rooms, collaborative workspaces, and other cutting-edge infrastructure to serve as an incubation center for indigenous technology solutions.
“By situating this ICT Park within the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, we are deliberately aligning our investment with the institution’s unique academic focus. Our goal is to create an ecosystem where state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure supports advanced education in artificial intelligence and other related fields while fostering cutting-edge research and skills development.”
“This facility is designed to enable the integration of emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), into research and learning. We urge the university and the Owerri community to embrace this park as a shared responsibility, ensuring it continues to serve generations to come.
“Together, we can build a future where technology empowers our youth, strengthens institutions, and transforms our economy.” he explained.
The Vice-Chancellor of FUTO, Prof. (Mrs.) Nnenna Otti expressed gratitude to the NCC, lauding the initiative as a game-changer for the university.
“This facility will undoubtedly enhance our efforts in producing highly skilled, digital-savvy graduates” Prof. Otti said.
Mrs Udoka Eze, Dean of the School of Information and Technology at FUTO, reiterated the university’s commitment to maintaining the facility.
“We have plans to allocate a dedicated budget for the upkeep of this facility. This project will not only boost online lectures but also solidify our position as a leading institution in digital education,” she stated.
The facility boasts a 100-seat capacity hall, five ICT hub halls, a 24-seater lounge, and multiple workspaces, making it a premier hub for digital research and development.
The park is expected to play a transformative role in digital education and research across the South-East region.
