PRESS STATEMENT
It is with an unflinching sense of responsibility and an abiding love for Imo State that I commend the Imo State Council of Elders and Governor Hope Uzodimma for their bold and historic adoption of the Imo Charter of Equity.
This remarkable initiative is a monumental stride toward fairness, ushering in a new era where power rotation will guarantee every zone the opportunity to contribute to the leadership and development of our beloved state.
The Imo Charter of Equity transcends mere political strategy—it is the moral compass of our collective governance. By enshrining the principle of equitable power sharing, it embodies the highest ideals of justice and fairness. It ensures that the governorship of our state rotates seamlessly and equitably among the zones of Imo State for the benefit of all.
Let it be unequivocally stated: it is the turn of Owerri Zone to produce the next governor of Imo State in 2027.
This is not a plea but a demand grounded in fairness, historical balance, and the principles enshrined in the Imo Charter of Equity. As history shows, power is not given but taken. Those with good conscience in Owerri, Okigwe, and Orlu Zones must rise in solidarity to support this equitable vision.
Owerri Zone has borne the brunt of political marginalization for far too long in the state. While other zones have had their fair share of the governorship, Owerri Zone has governed the state for a meager 29 months.
Evan Enwerem of blessed memory, who was elected in 1993 was sacked after 22 months in office. Emeka Ihedioha stayed only seven months in office. Though their exit was due to military and judicial interventions, it is proper and right that Owerri Zone takes the shot before Okigwe Zone in 2027.
In the past, other zones have taken advantage of our internal differences to deny Owerri Zone the governorship. This trend must change. Unity is our greatest strength, and it is only through solidarity that we can reclaim our rightful place in the governorship of Imo State.
History is clear and undeniable. Since 1979, Okigwe Zone has had eight years of governorship: Dee Sam Mbakwe governed from 1979–1983. Owerri Zone’s meager 29 months underscores a glaring imbalance.Between man and God, it is only just that Owerri Zone takes over in 2027.
Owerri Zone has historically supported the ascension of other zones to power. In 1999, Late Humphrey Anumudu of Owerri Zone conceded the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to Orlu Zone, paving the way for Achike Udenwa’s emergence as governor. Similarly, in 2007, Martin Agbaso, an Owerri Zone son and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA accepted in good faith the annulment of his likely victory.
Owerri Zone has made enormous contributions and sacrifices to preserve the unity, progress, and advancement of Imo State.Therefore, it is not out of place if the zone demands fairly the governorship of the state come 2027.
Our greatest obstacle as a zone has been our disunity. The infighting, rivalries, and divisions within Owerri Zone have not only weakened us but have emboldened other zones to exploit our lack of cohesion. It is time to close ranks, speak with one voice, and reclaim what is rightfully ours.
Owerri Zone has capable men and women who can lead Imo State. These individuals can guarantee good governance, unify the people, and embody leadership that is respected across all zones—accepted in Owerri Zone, adored in Okigwe Zone, and respected in Orlu Zone. It is important we unite for one candidate from our zone, someone capable and able to effectively govern and lead our State.
Owerri Zone must demonstrate seriousness and resolve. If such seriousness is evident, Governor Hope Uzodimma would certainly encourage and support the zone to produce his successor. This is the time to build alliances, engage in constructive dialogue with other brother zones, and compel them to see reasons with our legitimate and fair demand to produce the next governor of the State.
The time is now. Owerri Zone must rise, unite, and take its rightful place in shaping the future of Imo State. This is our moment, and we must seize it with courage and resolve.
