The Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, to rejoin their fold.
The appeal was made during an enlarged meeting of the State Executive Committee (SEC) held in Awka to review the party’s progress and chart a new course forward.
Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, had defected to the Labour Party before the 2023 presidential elections. He left the PDP citing concerns that his ambitions could not be realized within the party.
In a communique issued after the meeting, the PDP State Chairman, Chidi Chidebe, emphasized the importance of unity and ideological alignment.
“Alliances with incompatible political formations under the guise of coalitions rarely deliver lasting success. We extend an open invitation to all former and aggrieved members, especially our esteemed former governor, Mr. Peter Obi, to return to a rejuvenated and restructured PDP.”Chidebe said
Chidebe underlined the party’s readiness to welcome Obi and other former members with open arms.
“The PDP is stronger and more united now than ever. We urge all our brothers and sisters to join us in the collective pursuit of a better Nigeria,” he added.
The PDP leadership used the opportunity to rally support for its candidates in the upcoming elections. Chidebe specifically urged the Anambra electorate to back Mr. Jude Ezenwafor and his running mate, Mr. Francis Okeke, in the state polls.
“These are leaders with proven competence and dedication to the people’s cause,” he said.
He also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a level playing field.
“INEC must demonstrate impartiality and transparency in the coming elections. A free and fair process is the foundation of democracy,” Chidebe remarked.
During the meeting, the party also took significant internal decisions to strengthen its structure. Chief Clems Ezike was unanimously nominated to fill the vacant position of National Ex-Officio from Anambra State. Chidebe urged the Southeast Zonal Executive Committee, led by Chief Ali Odefa, to promptly forward Ezike’s nomination to the national secretariat.
Chidebe expressed optimism about the PDP’s future, stating that the party was now more equipped to tackle challenges and reclaim its place as the leading political force in the state and beyond. He encouraged members to remain steadfast and committed to the party’s vision.
The meeting ended with a renewed sense of purpose and a call for collective efforts to bring about transformative change. “Together, we can restore Nigeria’s glory and rebuild the trust of our people in governance,” Chidebe concluded.
