Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has emphasized the need for truth-telling as the only path to progress, acknowledging that Nigeria’s democratic journey has been far from ideal.
“Moments like this require serious truth-telling, for that is the only path to superior outcomes. The democratic experiment in Nigeria has been anything but ideal.” Otti said in his Democracy Day speech.
He acknowledged the growing disillusionment among Nigerians, many of whom feel democracy has not lived up to its promise.
“The menace of hunger, poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and deteriorating public infrastructure has tainted the appeal of democracy for millions,” he said.
The governor underscored the importance of addressing the root causes of these challenges through collective action and introspection.
“Patriotism demands that we spare a moment on a day like this to examine where our actions or inactions have contributed to these difficulties,” he said.
Otti noted that democracy thrives only when citizens actively participate in its processes and hold themselves and their leaders accountable. He condemned practices that undermine democratic principles, such as voter apathy and corruption.
“Each time we sell our votes or manipulate the system for personal gain, we pollute the essence of democracy,” he stated.
He urged Nigerians to view the democratic process as a shared responsibility that requires integrity and commitment at every level.
Reflecting on the economic and social challenges Nigeria faces, the governor called for transformational leadership that prioritizes the common good over personal interests.
“Our leadership must reflect the principles of accountability and selflessness if we are to realize democracy’s full potential,” he remarked.
Otti emphasized the need for leaders to bridge gaps in public infrastructure and basic services.He also highlighted the importance of citizen involvement, urging Nigerians to embrace patriotism in their daily lives.
“Democracy is a treasure, but it is also a responsibility. We must take ownership of our roles in building the nation we envision,” he said.
He called on citizens to make choices that align with the collective interest rather than individual gain.
