The Executive Chairman of Ngor Okpala Local Government Area, Chief Mrs. Chika Ibekwe, has initiated measures to enhance security by mandating the registration of all scrap dealers operating within the LGA.
She emphasized the importance of streamlining their activities to protect lives and property in the area.
Speaking during a meeting on Tuesday at the Council Headquarters in Umuneke, Chief Mrs. Ibekwe outlined her administration’s commitment to curbing illicit activities among scrap dealers.
She reminded them of their responsibility to conduct their operations within the confines of the law, warning sternly against acts of vandalism or theft within Ngor Okpala.
To ensure proper identification and accountability, the Council Boss distributed registration forms to all scrap dealers, requiring submission within two days.
She further announced the issuance of ID cards to all registered dealers, noting that operating without one would attract strict penalties.
Mrs. Ibekwe directed security agencies to apprehend and prosecute any scrap dealer found operating without a valid ID card.
She explained that the initiative was designed to eliminate unauthorized operators and bolster security surveillance in the area.
“Adherence to these guidelines will not only ensure community safety but also protect legitimate operators,” she said.
She reassured scrap dealers that the council would provide support and protection to those who comply with the new regulations.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ngor Okpala, who was also present at the meeting, praised the Council Chairman for her proactive approach.
He warned that individuals operating without proper registration would be classified as wanted criminals, reiterating the police’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property.
“The activities of scrap dealers must not compromise the safety and orderliness of Ngor Okpala,” the DPO stated.
He assured residents that the police would rigorously enforce the new measures to ensure compliance.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Ngor Okpala Scrap Dealers Association, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwachi, pledged the association’s full cooperation with the council’s directives.
He also used the opportunity to highlight challenges faced by scrap dealers in the area, expressing optimism that the new measures would address some of their concerns.
