Following an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at the Eke Ubaheze Market Square in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, on June 24, 2025, claiming one life and injuring five others, the Imo State Police Command has assured residents of intensified security as investigations into the incident commence.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry, the explosion occurred around 2:30 PM when a woman, identified as Ngozi Umeh, stepped on a landmine allegedly planted by suspected members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN group.
“Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, while five others who were caught in the blast are receiving treatment,” Henry stated.
Responding swiftly to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, deployed the Command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Tactical Teams, and personnel from Orsu and Orlu Divisions to secure the area.
“Our operatives cordoned off the vicinity, evacuated the victims, and conducted thorough sweeps to ensure there were no other explosives,” Danjuma confirmed.
The market has since reopened, with enhanced security measures in place. Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has been tasked with leading a comprehensive investigation to identify and apprehend the culprits.
“We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure justice is served,” the Commissioner of Police stated, extending condolences to the family of the deceased.
“Our hearts go out to the loved ones of Ngozi Umeh, and we pray for the swift recovery of those injured in this unfortunate incident.”
Residents of Orsu and surrounding communities have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities or objects to law enforcement.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with market traders fleeing in panic.
“It was a nightmare. We are grateful for the quick response of the police in restoring calm.” a shop owner recounted.
The Police Command reiterated its commitment to combating criminal activities and ensuring public safety in Imo State.
“We will not relent in our efforts to secure every part of the state,” Danjuma declared.
