The Federal Government has clarified that there is no immediate plan to enforce the 5 per cent Petroleum Products Tax recently introduced in the new tax legislation.
Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, disclosed this at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, amid mounting public outrage over the levy.
The proposed tax has stirred nationwide criticism, with organised labour threatening strikes unless the policy is scrapped.
Many Nigerians have also voiced concerns that the measure would further worsen living conditions already strained by inflation and subsidy removal.
Edun assured that government was mindful of the economic pressures citizens face and would tread cautiously on policies that could deepen hardship.
