Professor Mahmood Yakubu has handed over the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, the oldest serving National Commissioner in the electoral body.
Agbamuche-Mbu will oversee the affairs of the commission in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive chairman by President Bola Tinubu.
Yakubu’s handover marks the end of his tenure, during which INEC conducted two general elections and several off-cycle polls under his supervision.
His leadership was marked by the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV), both aimed at enhancing election transparency.
INEC sources confirmed that Agbamuche-Mbu, a lawyer and former editor, will ensure administrative continuity within the commission while preparations for the next electoral cycle continue.
Her appointment as acting chairman is in line with the commission’s internal protocol, which allows the most senior national commissioner to assume the role in the absence of a substantive chairman.
