In a heated exchange over the state of governance in Imo, Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu has sharply criticized the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma, labeling it as “insensitive” and “neglectful” of the struggles faced by the people.
According to Anyanwu, who currently serves as the National Secretary of the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and was the party’s candidate in the November 2023 Imo governorship election, the Imo State government has failed to address critical issues like hunger, poverty, and insecurity, leaving citizens in a state of disarray.
Anyanwu in a statement signed by Ikenna Onuoha, his Special Adviser on Media, highlighted the “harsh and callous” treatment of Imo people by the APC-led government, describing it as a regime driven by “selfishness, nepotism, and gangsterism.”
He argued that the government lacks a clear blueprint to tackle the needs of its citizens, leading to a breakdown in social services, economic stability, and public safety.
“The state is in turmoil, with civil servants and pensioners left unpaid, and citizens grappling with hunger,” part of the statement read.
The senator cited specific issues, including the government’s failure to negotiate fair fuel prices with petroleum marketers, resulting in higher costs for essential goods and services in the state.
He criticized what he calls “reckless spending” on private jets and other non-essential projects, suggesting these expenditures are wasteful and detrimental to the state’s economy.
Anyanwu accused the Uzodimma administration of neglecting the welfare of low-income earners by imposing heavy taxes and fees on public transportation operators.
This, he argued, adds to the financial burdens on struggling citizens and signals an alarming disconnect between the government and the needs of its people.
He claimed that the government’s inexperience and insensitivity have led to a rise in social tensions.
In response to Anyanwu’s claims, Governor Uzodimma’s administration issued a scathing rebuttal, defending its record and dismissing Anyanwu’s criticisms as “hollow rhetoric from a failed politician.”
In a statement signed by Hon. Sir Collins Ughalaa, Special Adviser on Public Orientation, the administration asserted that it has made significant strides in infrastructure, agriculture, education, and social welfare, achievements that are “visible and verifiable” throughout the state.
Highlighting it’s accomplishments, the administration cited the completion of 62 roads totaling 189 kilometers, and ongoing construction on 53 additional roads covering 375.8 kilometers.
The government also touted its food security initiatives, including the employment of 54 new agricultural extension officers and the distribution of free fertilizer to farmers across the 27 LGAs.
According to the statement, Governor Uzodimma’s administration has also made strides in education and youth development.
Ughalaa pointed to initiatives like the Skill Up Imo project, which has empowered over 20,000 youths, as evidence of the administration’s commitment to building a prosperous and self-sufficient future.
Furthermore, the administration took a swipe at Anyanwu’s track record, accusing him of “cheering on violent agitators” during a period of heightened security challenges in Imo.
Ughalaa argued that while the Uzodimma administration worked to restore peace, Anyanwu allegedly sought to capitalize on unrest for political gain.
“The people of Imo deserve leaders who build, not destroy; who unite, not divide,” Ughalaa stated.
He emphasized the progress the administration made in social welfare and security, highlighting a 70% reduction in crime rates and a 45% decrease in transportation costs for civil servants due to the implementation of a free bus shuttle program.
This, they argued, refutes Anyanwu’s accusations of insensitivity and negligence.
In an apparent jab at Anyanwu’s credibility, the statement referenced his recent suspension from the PDP and alleged mismanagement of N2.5 billion in campaign funds.
He questioned the legitimacy of his criticisms, calling them “the hallmark of a failed populist with nothing to offer but resentment.”
