Nigerian American Joins California Governorship Race

Nigerian-born American Dr. Akinyemi Agbede has officially announced his candidacy for the upcoming California governorship election.

Agbede previously contested for governor in 2014 and 2018, as well as for the U.S. Senate in 2016 and 2022.

His decision has stirred excitement among his supporters and political allies, who see him as a determined advocate for progress and change.

Agbede revealed that his inspiration stems from the recent political success of Kemi Badenoch, a Nigerian-born who rose to prominence as the Labour Party leader in the United Kingdom.

In a statement released on Sunday, Agbede said

‘My relentless pursuit of the exalted position of governor in California is borne out of my commitment to serve the diverse communities of California.

“The campaign will focus on educational reform, economic development, and social justice—issues that resonate deeply with voters across the state.”

Born on May 5, 1964, in Lagos, Nigeria, Agbede boasts an impressive academic background, holding a Ph.D. in Mathematical Analysis from the University of Cambridge.

He has dedicated much of his career to mathematics education, using it as a tool to empower students.
