A coalition of Imo top members of the Imo State House of Assembly has raised the alarm over what it described as a deliberate attempt by “self-serving political actors” to destabilize the state under the guise of championing the Imo Charter of Equity.
The top lawmakers cutting across the three geopolitical zones, issued a stern warning to those it accused of overheating the polity for selfish ends.
In a statement issued in Owerri on Friday, the lawmakers said: “Enough is enough! Those who are fomenting trouble and causing unnecessary division in our dear state, hiding under the long-overflogged Charter of Equity, should desist and allow Imo State to progress.”
The statement, signed by Rt. Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu (Orlu Zone), Hon. Kanayo Onyemechi (Owerri Zone), and Hon. Sam Osuji (Okigwe Zone), noted that the actions of these political actors are “carefully orchestrated schemes designed to ignite unrest and disrupt the peace painstakingly nurtured in Imo.”
“These individuals are operating under the false pretense of promoting the Charter of Equity, but their nocturnal political maneuvers are aimed at sowing seeds of bitterness and discord across communities,” the statement read.
The lawmakers emphasized that Imo belongs to all its citizens, cautioning against any group arrogating undue importance to themselves as self-appointed custodians of the charter or political warlords.
“No individual, group, or zone holds a superior claim to Imo indigeneship. It is deeply troubling and unacceptable,” they stressed.
They further warned: “Those responsible for this campaign of hate, division, and political mischief must retrace their steps or be held accountable if any civil unrest or breakdown of law and order occurs in the state.”
The group called on Governor Hope Uzodimma to remain steadfast in his efforts at building a new Imo, commending his administration’s strides in infrastructure and human capital development. “Governor Hope Uzodimma is laying a solid foundation for sustainable development in Imo State, much like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did in Lagos State,” they declared.
They argued that Tinubu’s model in Lagos is now a reference point nationally, stating: “Today, Lagos thrives economically and infrastructurally because of that solid foundation. That same future awaits Imo under the visionary leadership of Uzodimma.”
