The Action Peoples Party (APP) in Imo State has officially welcomed the defection of two federal lawmakers, describing their move as a significant development in the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press release issued on April 1, 2026, the Ernest Njesi-led Interim Caretaker Committee of APP congratulated Rt. Hon. Barr. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere, representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency, and Dr. Matthew Nwogu, representing Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency, on their decision to join the party.
The statement, signed by Cajetan Duke, JP, Interim State Publicity Secretary of the APP, described the lawmakers’ defection—officially announced on the floor of the House of Representatives—as bold and courageous, sending positive ripples across Imo politics.
According to APP, the lawmakers’ decision reflects the growing demand among Imo residents for inclusive and responsive governance that addresses the needs of all constituents regardless of political affiliation or senatorial zone.
The party noted that Ugochinyere and Nwogu had shown leadership by aligning with the aspirations of their constituents, who, the party said, have long sought a credible alternative to existing political structures.
The Interim Caretaker Committee emphasized that the defection represents a move away from what it described as politics of exclusion, absentee governance, and underperformance, and underscores a commitment to people-centered leadership.
APP further stated that the entry of the two federal lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and Labour Party respectively strengthens the party’s structure in Imo State and enhances its readiness to contest effectively in upcoming elections.
Welcoming the legislators, the party assured them of a warm integration into the APP, while calling on party members and supporters to rally behind the newcomers in the interest of unity and progress.
The party also extended an invitation to other political leaders, stakeholders, and residents of Imo State who share the party’s vision to join APP, describing the defections as part of a broader effort to build a credible political alternative.
APP reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and purposeful leadership, stressing that the lawmakers’ inclusion is expected to inject fresh energy and innovative ideas into the party’s operations.
