Apex Orlu socio-political group, Orluzurumee, has thrown its weight behind the Imo Charter of Equity and endorsed the emergence of the next governor of Imo State from Owerri Zone in 2027, declaring that the principle of fairness and balanced representation should guide the succession process.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the group led by its President General, Hon Ugochukwu Nzekwe said it was “not opposed” to Owerri Zone producing Governor Hope Uzodimma’s successor, noting that such an arrangement aligns with the spirit of justice, inclusiveness and political balance among the three senatorial zones of the state.

He particularly commended leaders and stakeholders from Okigwe Zone for what it described as a “commendable display of statesmanship” in publicly expressing readiness to support Owerri Zone for the governorship in 2027.

According to Orluzurumee, the position taken by Okigwe leaders reflects political maturity and demonstrates a collective resolve to sustain unity and peace in the state through respect for the Charter of Equity.

While backing the zoning arrangement, Nzekwe however, maintained that equity should not be interpreted as a mere rotational formula, stressing that competence, character, preparedness and credibility must remain key factors in determining who eventually emerges as governor.

“The central question must go beyond zoning: Who is the candidate?” the President General asked, insisting that Owerri Zone must present a credible leader with a proven track record, clear vision and the capacity to govern effectively.

He urged political leaders in Owerri Zone to seize the opportunity by presenting what it described as “not just a candidate, but a leader,” who possesses the experience, excellence and deep understanding of governance required to move the state forward.

The group also ruled out support for any political arrangement capable of reversing what it called the developmental gains recorded under the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma, citing infrastructure development, strategic reforms and inclusive governance across the three zones, especially Orlu zone.

It described Uzodimma’s administration as one marked by purposeful leadership and visible progress, insisting that the next governor must be willing and able to consolidate on the achievements of the current administration rather than derail them.

Reaffirming its loyalty to the governor, Orluzurumee said it stands firmly with Uzodimma as the duly elected leader of the state and as a proud son of Orlu Zone, praising his courage, vision and commitment to development and unity.

The group listed qualities it expects in the next governor to include proven administrative capacity, integrity, sincerity of purpose, commitment to fairness and inclusiveness, ability to maintain peace and security, and determination to deepen ongoing developmental strides.

Nzekwe reiterated its commitment to peace, justice and sustainable development in Imo State, stressing that while zoning remains important, the ultimate objective should be quality leadership, declaring that “Imo State deserves not just a turn, but the best.”
