Prominent political leaders, stakeholders and professionals in Owerri North Local Government Area have intensified support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Imo East Senatorial District, Prince (Dr) Alex Mbata, with a renewed call for a united grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.

The move followed a strategic meeting held on Saturday at Egbelu-Obube in Owerri North, where participants, drawn from different political parties, professional bodies and interest groups, resolved to work collectively for Mbata’s senatorial bid under the platform of the Owerri North Coalition for Good Governance.

According to a statement released by Alex Mbata Media Office in Owerri, the coalition said its decision was informed by what it described as Mbata’s record of community development, philanthropy and grassroots engagement across the nine local government areas of Owerri Zone.

Addressing the gathering, the leader of the coalition, Hon. Dan Ikpeazu, said the alliance transcends political affiliations and is driven by a common desire to support a candidate they believe has consistently invested in the welfare of the people. He described Mbata as “a community developer” whose humanitarian activities and grassroots interventions have earned him widespread acceptance.

Elder statesman and former Imo State APC Chairman, Chief Barr. Marcellinus Nlemigbo (Marcon), urged members of the coalition to place the collective interest of Owerri Zone above partisan considerations. He said Mbata’s politics is rooted in service, adding that his contributions to the lives of ordinary people distinguish him from many contemporary political actors.

Also speaking, former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Bede Eke, and former member of the Imo State House of Assembly, Nze Ray Emeana, called on members of the coalition to deepen grassroots mobilisation across their respective communities. They described the emerging unity among political leaders in Owerri North as a development capable of inspiring similar collaborations in other local government areas of Owerri Zone.

Mbata, a businessman and philanthropist, is widely regarded as one of the leading contenders in the race for the Imo East Senate seat. His growing political profile, driven largely by years of empowerment programmes and humanitarian interventions, has continued to attract support from political stakeholders and community leaders across the zone.

Responding to the endorsement, Mbata described the confidence reposed in him as both humbling and encouraging. He thanked members of the coalition for their support and assured them that he would remain committed to serving the people of Owerri Zone with dedication and integrity.

“My record of service will continue to speak for me,” Mbata said, expressing optimism that unity, hard work and sustained grassroots engagement would strengthen the campaign in the months ahead. He also urged members of the coalition to continue reaching out to more communities as political activities gather momentum ahead of the election.

The endorsement by the Owerri North Coalition for Good Governance adds to a series of recent declarations of support for Mbata from various groups across Owerri Zone, reflecting the increasing tempo of political mobilisation as the contest for the Imo East Senatorial seat begins to take shape.
