There is growing disquiet within the political camp of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma following reports that the governor may unveil the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the November 2027 governorship election within the next three months.
The development, according to political insiders who spoke with INNONEWS, has unsettled several actors within the governor’s camp who are believed to be quietly nursing governorship ambitions. The report that Uzodimma has commenced the process of selecting and unveiling his successor has also heightened anxiety among aspirants who have remained deliberately restrained, apparently waiting for the governor to reveal his hand.
The governor was said to have disclosed the three-month timeline during a meeting with members of the Imo State Council of Elders and the State Council of Traditional Rulers at the Government House, Owerri. However, no official press statement or communiqué from the meeting containing the governor’s reported position is currently in the public domain. The state government has also not publicly refuted the INNONEWS report that Uzodimma has kick-started the process of unveiling his successor.
The reported development has, however, left the Imo APC in an unusual state of political suspense. The party has neither officially reacted to the governor’s reported declaration nor taken any visible step to commence a formal succession process. A party source contacted by INNONEWS declined to comment, saying there was yet to be any clear directive from the governor or the party leadership on the matter.
But within the governor’s political camp, those believed to be harbouring governorship ambitions are said to be keeping their heads down, apparently unwilling to make any move that could be interpreted as challenging or pre-empting the governor’s choice. The atmosphere, according to sources, is one of cautious waiting, with political actors watching closely for the first concrete signal from the governor.
The latest development represents a significant shift from the prolonged uncertainty that has surrounded the succession question in Imo APC. For months, political actors have been trying to decipher Uzodimma’s intentions, with the governor maintaining considerable ambiguity over who he would support to succeed him. Earlier reports had also linked the succession calculations to the APC’s internal zoning debate and the clamour for Owerri Zone to produce the next governor.
One source familiar with the unfolding political calculations told INNONEWS that the succession question was too consequential to be handled casually, suggesting that if the reported three-month timeline is accurate, the governor would eventually need to summon a broader meeting of APC stakeholders and party chieftains before making his choice public.
“Succession is not a small venture,” the source said, adding that the governor would have to consult widely and bring key party leaders into the process if the time for unveiling his preferred candidate was indeed drawing near.
For now, however, the silence from the APC and the governor’s camp has only deepened the intrigue. With several political blocs already positioning themselves for 2027 and the Charter of Equity remaining a major factor in the debate over zoning, all eyes are now on Uzodimma. Whether the next three months will finally end the suspense—or merely open a new chapter in Imo’s fiercely contested succession politics—may depend entirely on when the governor decides to speak.
