Eminent Nigerians from various walks of life are expected to witness the ground breaking commissioning ceremony of Assumpta Science Centre in Ofekata Orodo in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State on April 3rd, 2018.
Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu disclosed this when he paid an on the spot assessment visit to the centre at the weekend. The visit was aimed at enabling the minister assess the level of readiness of the centre for the ceremony.
The Minister while inspecting the project expressed satisfaction with the level of readiness for the event and said he is looking forward to its commissioning.
It would be recalled that Dr. Onu had last month embarked on an inspection visit of the centre where he highlighted some of the gains of the project. He had said the Assumpta Science Centre is a Federal Government project in partnership with the Vatican that will serve as an informal training centre for young scientists across Africa which is aimed at enshrining practical aspect of Science study in Nigeria and other African countries as an area of specialization.
According to him, the institution is also expected to admit students from other parts of the world that will be taught Chemistry with complementary subject areas in Biology, Physics and Mathematics.
He had explained that the Centre will be replicated in the six geo political zones across the country and will go a long way to aid national development with the application of science and technology.
The Minister had last year visited the Vatican where he held discussions with His Holiness, Pope Francis and other Vatican authorities to accelerate the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the effective take off of the Centre.
