The event also had in attendance hundreds of Imo State pensioners who for the umpteenth time complained on non payment of their pensions by the Imo State Government.

In his address, Imo State Chairman of the Union, Chief Nwokedi Donatus appealed to the State Government to pay Imo pensioners 100% of their pensions

“As of today, the Imo State Government has refused to implement the Court Order” he said.

Nwokedi described Prof Protus as a beloved son, urging everyone to join him “in this humanitarian gesture since the Imo Rescue Mission has refused to rescue Imo pensioners from abject poverty, starvation and mass death”

Speaking to newsmen, Prof Uzorma thanked God for adding another year to his life, stating that he decided to celebrate his birthday with pensioners in the State because he has a passion for fighting for justice and the truth.

Prof Protus has been a consistent critic of the present administration in Imo State condemning in strong terms its anti people policies. An advocate of  youth participation in governance, he was the 2015 Deputy Governorship candidate of the United Peoples Party, UPP.
