A Frontline House of Assembly aspirant in Ezinihitte Mbaise, in Imo State, Mrs Vivian Dimgba, has revealed factors hindering women’s active participation in Politics.
In her message to commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day, Dimgba listed sexual harassment, economic inequality, violence, sexism, gender stereotypes and structural barriers in political parties, as key factors affecting women participation in politics.
“All these are hindering factors to women’s substantive influence in decision making processes and calls for more honest conversation” she stated in her message.
She expressed concern that despite Nigeria’s participation in Beijing Conference in China, 25 years ago, which affirmed women participation in electoral processes, women in Nigeria still lack behind in active politicking in the country.
Dimgba added that “Gender equality is pivotal for sustainable development.
“Women should be free to run for office without fear of sexual harassment and electoral violence”
She urged women and girls in her Ezinihitte Mbaise State Constituency, not to give up.
“Dream big. Never stop aspiring. Stay consistent. The world is your oyster and you are allowed to dominate.
