Strike:Banks, Schools,Others Shut Down In Ebonyi

Banks, the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, and other Federal establishments within the Ebonyi State capital, Abakaliki, were closed Tuesday, as a result of the two-day warning strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).


Also, the State Secretariat, the Ebonyi State Library Board, the Government House Cabinet Office, and the Ebonyi State Polytechnic Ikwo were all closed when our reporter visited.


This newspaper further observed that bank customers, court personnel, and lawyers who were in court for various matters were stranded at the entrance gates of the banks and the judicial complex.


Few nurses and consultants were observed providing skeletal services at the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, as the majority of the administrative staff participated in the strike.


It was also observed that a small number of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) employees, particularly those at the emergency department of the distribution company, were seen providing skeletal services.


In an interview with this newspaper, Mr. Kingsley Orji, a patient at the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, expressed regret over the federal government’s treatment of Nigerians and urged President Bola Tinubu to act quickly to put an end to the citizens suffering and hunger in the land.
