The 2002 Old Girls of the Owerri Girls Secondary School,Alumni Association, Owerri, has launched the maiden event of their “Give Back Project” in their alma mater.
The project offered a career master class to the senior students in S.S. 2 and S.S. 3, respectively, aimed at helping the students choose their paths.
The project was also designed to give scholarship grants to the two overall best students in JSS3 and SS3, respectively. This will cover their school fees for the session as well as their exam fees, comprising both NECO and WAEC fees.
This, according to them, exemplifies the vision and mission of establishing the alumni group.
The project lead of the 2002-old girls alumni give-back project, Mrs. Nkem Daberechi Oguamah,in her lecture titled “The Future is Female,charged the students to strive towards breaking barriers that might have been placed on them by society and begin to venture into career paths where they have potential,disregarding the discrimination that exists.
Speaking as a guest at the event,the Director of Imo Broadcasting Corporation (IBC), Mrs. Ify Onyegbule,eulogized the 2002 set of OGSS for their benevolence and sacrifice in giving back to their alma mater and urged the beneficiaries of the scholarship grants to keep up with their dedication to their academics.
On her part, the principal of the school,who is also an old girl of the school,Lolo Christiana Nlekwa, thanked the 2002 old girls and the other old girls for their continuous support and commitment in ensuring that the school and students thrive in their studies, stating that most of the renovated buildings in the school were the result of the effort of the old girls,expressing hope that the project should be sustained.
Reacting to the scholarship grant given to them,the overall best student in JSS 3, Miss Janefrances Umejiego, and the overall best student in SS3, Miss Blessing Onyenweaku, appreciated the 2002-year-old girls for their benevolence.
Highlights of the event were the presentation of the scholarship grants of one hundred and fifty thousand naira,each to the overall best students in junior and senior secondary, and a collective verbal affirmation by the SS2 and SS3 students.
