The South East Coalition For Good Governance (SECG) has criticized Senators and members of the House of Representatives for their decision to acquire luxurious Sporting Utility Vehicles (SUVs) as official vehicles.
The National Assembly members plan to purchase 469 SUVs at a cost of N160 million each.
A statement, signed by SECG President Emmanuel Okwu in Enugu, expressed strong condemnation of the lawmakers’ choice, claiming that it demonstrates insensitivity to the plight of the people.
The statement reads, “It is unbelievable that Senators and members of the House of Representatives could opt for luxurious vehicles at an exorbitant rate at a time when Nigerians are suffering due to the removal of fuel subsidy.
“This is hypocritical. How can our legislators tell us to endure the pain of the removal of subsidy while they cruise in expensive cars? This is unacceptable.”
SECG highlighted the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, such as rising inflation, increased transportation costs, and difficulties affording basic needs.
They argue that it is shameful for lawmakers to justify the purchase of such luxurious vehicles, especially when Nigerians are grappling with economic hardships.
“At a time the nation is bleeding, National Assembly members choose to enjoy themselves. It is very clear that our lawmakers do not care a hoot over the hardship Nigerians are going through since fuel subsidy was removed.
“Some families cannot afford three meals any longer. Children are dropping out of school over parents inability to pay school fees, cost of transportation has continued to increase on a daily basis
“It is shameful that our lawmakers are claiming that they want to use the cars because of the bad roads in the country. Is this not shameful? Who should take the blame for bad roads in the country?
“ There is no justification whatsoever for our lawmakers to enjoy such splendor and opulence, when Nigerians are groaning over high inflation, and increasing foreign exchange rate
“Nigerians alone should not bear the pain and burden of the bad economy. Our lawmakers and all elected public office holders should equally share in the pain” the group stated.
