Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State on Thursday signed two executive bills into law, to tackle the critical issues of electricity generation and distribution, as well as the merger of campuses of the Imo State Polytechnic.
The governor emphasized that the poor state of electricity generation and distribution in Imo State has hindered the development indices of the state, and this situation must be addressed urgently.
Governor Uzodimma revealed that he has approached President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to allow the Imo State government to take over the abandoned Egbema Power Plant, a federal government project conceived under the Niger Delta Power Holding Company in 2006.
According to him, the President has graciously granted the request, and the state government is set to rehabilitate the facilities and utilize the plant to solve the electricity challenges of the state, aligning with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The governor, said he had visited the site and accompanied by experts, technical partners, and government officials, to assess the level of decay at the site, which will require millions of dollars in investment.
He said the technical partners and experts have also visited the 27 local government areas of Imo State to evaluate the connectivity of communities to the plant.
Governor Uzodimma expressed optimism that within 12 months, Imo State’s story regarding effective power generation, supply, and consumption will be transformed.
